Recycled polyester gets marketed as the responsible choice, the one made from bottles instead of oil. A December 2025 lab study found it actually sheds more microplastic fibre than virgin polyester, not less. Here's what the evidence shows about both fabrics, including the parts that don't fit neatly into a marketing claim.

Does recycled polyester actually shed less microplastic?

No, and the most recent, most realistic testing says the opposite. In December 2025, the Changing Markets Foundation commissioned researchers at Çukurova University to test 51 garments from five major brands. Recycled polyester released 55% more microplastic particles during washing than virgin polyester from the same brands, and the particles it shed were around 20% smaller, meaning they travel further and are more easily taken up by living tissue. A single wash load, the study found, can release up to 900,000 microplastic fibres.

Not every study agrees. Some earlier lab work testing isolated fabric swatches under controlled conditions found no meaningful difference between recycled and virgin polyester. The disagreement seems to come down to method: testing real, commercially sold garments, the way people actually wear and wash them, tends to show recycled polyester shedding more. What no study has shown is recycled polyester reliably shedding less.

Is recycled polyester still just plastic?

Yes, in every sense that matters for what happens after you buy it. Recycled polyester is the same PET plastic as virgin polyester, just remelted from bottles or old textiles. It still doesn't biodegrade. A plastic bottle can be recycled back into another bottle more or less indefinitely. Once that plastic becomes a garment, it typically can't loop back into new bottles, so the "closed loop" language brands use doesn't really describe what's happening.

The most realistic testing available shows recycled polyester shedding more microplastic than virgin polyester, not less. It's still plastic, and it still doesn't biodegrade. "Recycled" is not the same claim as "doesn't shed" or "breaks down."

Does organic cotton really use 91% less water?

You'll see that number everywhere, and the honest answer is that it's more complicated than the marketing suggests. The 91% figure traces back to a 2014 Textile Exchange analysis. Since then, other researchers, including a widely cited industry report on cotton misinformation, have pushed back on it. A 2025 systematic review of cotton life-cycle studies actually found organic methods increasing water consumption by an average of 172% in some contexts, because organic cotton typically yields less fibre per hectare, so growing the same amount of fabric can mean farming more land.

What holds up more consistently across the research is this: organic cotton avoids the synthetic pesticides and fertilizers used in conventional cotton farming, which cause well-documented harm to soil health and waterways. That benefit doesn't depend on which water study you believe.

Where does hemp fit into this comparison?

Hemp is worth pulling out as its own case, since it sidesteps most of the cotton water debate entirely. It's typically grown with little to no irrigation and minimal to no synthetic pesticides, thanks to a naturally pest-resistant plant and a short growing cycle, and its deep root structure lets it draw moisture from further underground than cotton can reach. Estimates vary by region and methodology, the same caveat that applies to every fibre in this comparison, but hemp consistently lands well below conventional cotton on both water and chemical inputs across the research.

It's also biodegradable, doesn't shed plastic, and gets stronger and softer with each wash rather than breaking down the way synthetic fibre does. So which fabric is actually better?

It depends what you're optimising for, and being honest about that is more useful than picking a winner. If your concern is microplastic pollution and what happens to a garment at the end of its life, natural fibre, organic cotton, hemp, or Tencel™ lyocell, wins clearly. All three are biodegradable. None of them shed plastic. That conclusion holds regardless of how the water-usage debate eventually settles.

If you're specifically trying to avoid adding to the plastic problem in oceans, waterways, and apparently human tissue, recycled polyester doesn't solve that, whatever the label implies. Hemp in particular is worth a specific mention here: it typically needs far less irrigation than cotton and grows without synthetic pesticides in most conditions, which is part of why it's Strand's signature fibre.
