A rash from a new workout top is rarely a true allergy to the fibre itself. Dermatology research points to the dyes and finishing chemicals added during manufacturing as the more common cause, and sportswear has a few specific culprits worth knowing before you write off an entire fabric type.
Is it the fabric or something added to it?
Almost always the latter. Clinical reviews describe genuine allergic reactions to a raw textile fibre as rare. What shows up far more often is contact dermatitis caused by the chemicals used to process that fibre: dyes, finishing resins, and other additives that never fully wash out. One dermatology reference source puts documented fibre-only reactions at well under 1% across several regional studies, with dyes and finishing chemicals responsible for the large majority of genuine textile reactions.
That distinction matters, because it means "I react to polyester" is usually more accurately "I react to something that was put on this particular polyester garment." A different garment in the same fibre, dyed or finished differently, might not cause the same reaction at all.
What in activewear specifically causes reactions?
A few repeat offenders show up across the dermatology literature. Disperse dyes, the class used almost exclusively to colour synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon, and acetate, are the single most common cause of textile-related allergic contact dermatitis. They aren't used on natural fibres like cotton, hemp, or linen, which use a different dye class entirely.
- Formaldehyde finishing resins, used to keep synthetic fabric wrinkle-free or "non-iron," a very common treatment on performance sportswear.
- Rubber accelerators like thiurams and carbamates, used in the elastane and elastic components of leggings, sports bras, and waistbands.
- Metal hardware, particularly nickel in zips, clasps, and drawcord fittings, a well-known separate allergen.
Notice that the last two are specific to how sportswear is built, not to activewear fabric in general. Rubber accelerators in particular show up exactly where an elastic waistband sits against skin, which is precisely the area where reactions are most often reported.
True allergy to a fabric fibre is rare. Dyes on synthetic fibres, wrinkle-resistant finishing chemicals, and rubber accelerators in elastic are the more common, well-documented causes of activewear skin reactions.
Why does synthetic fabric make irritation worse even without an allergy?
Because allergy isn't the only mechanism at play. During exercise, sweating increases and skin becomes more permeable, which is exactly when it's most exposed to whatever a fabric is holding against it. Synthetic fabric traps heat and moisture more than natural fibre does, and that combination of friction, heat, and damp is enough to irritate skin on its own, no allergy required. This is a bigger problem for anyone with eczema or psoriasis, where the skin barrier is already compromised.
Does "natural fibre" automatically mean hypoallergenic?
No, and it's worth being honest about that rather than overselling it. Genuine allergy to cotton or hemp fibre itself is rare, but it isn't impossible, and some people react specifically to wool's lanolin content or to a dye used on a natural fibre garment just as they would on a synthetic one. What natural fibre removes is a specific, well-documented category of risk: the disperse dyes and rubber accelerators used almost exclusively in synthetic and elastic textile processing. It doesn't make a garment automatically risk-free for every single person.

What should you actually look for if your skin reacts to workout clothes?
A few practical checks go a long way. Avoid labels marked "non-iron," "wrinkle-free," or "easy care," since that usually signals a chemical finish. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which specifically tests finished fabric for a defined list of harmful substances, including several known contact allergens. If elastic waistbands are the recurring problem, that points fairly directly at rubber accelerators, and a fabric without elastane at all removes the issue rather than managing around it.
If a reaction is persistent or severe, a dermatologist can patch-test for the exact allergen rather than leaving you guessing between fibre, dye, and finish. That's a conversation worth having with a professional, not something to self-diagnose from an article.
