Cotton doesn't wick sweat, it absorbs it, and that's a real, measurable difference from synthetic fabric. During a hard, sweaty session that difference can be a genuine downside. During most of the rest of what people call "working out," it barely matters, and cotton's other qualities start to outweigh it.

Does cotton actually wick sweat?

No, and this is the root of most of the confusion. Wicking is a specific mechanical process: a fabric moves moisture along its fibre surface, away from your skin, out to the fabric's exterior where it can evaporate. Synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon are built for exactly this, they're hydrophobic, meaning they repel water at the fibre level and push it outward through capillary channels between the fibres.

Cotton fibre does the opposite. It's hydrophilic, it draws water into the fibre itself and holds it there. That's absorption, not wicking, and it's a genuinely different mechanism with a different result. A cotton shirt during a sweaty workout gets damp and stays damp, because the fabric is holding onto the moisture rather than moving it away from you.

What does that actually mean while you're training?

A few concrete things. The fabric gets heavier as it absorbs sweat, which you'll notice on a long run more than a short one. It dries slowly, so if you're not changing right after, you're sitting in damp fabric for a while. And once you stop moving and cool down, a soaked cotton shirt can feel cold against your skin, since evaporation pulls heat from your body faster than a synthetic shell that's already pushed the moisture to the outside.

None of that is invented. It's the direct, physical consequence of a fibre that absorbs rather than repels, and it's the real basis for cotton's reputation in performance and running communities specifically.

The short version

Cotton absorbs sweat instead of wicking it away, so it gets heavy and dries slowly during intense exercise. That's a real downside for hard, sustained sweating. It isn't a reason to avoid natural fibre altogether, hemp and lyocell solve the specific problem without the tradeoffs synthetic fabric brings instead.

So is cotton actually bad for exercise?

It depends heavily on what the exercise is. For a long run, an intense interval session, or anything with sustained heavy sweating, the absorption problem is real and worth avoiding. For lifting, walking, yoga, low-intensity training, or just existing in a tank top on a hot day, cotton's breathability and softness are doing more for you than its slow drying time is costing you. The open weave still lets air move across your skin, which is a different property from moisture-wicking and one cotton genuinely has.

The mistake is treating "cotton" and "moisture-wicking synthetic" as the only two options, since neither fully solves the problem on its own. One holds onto sweat, the other traps it against your skin instead of letting it go.

Does a looser or tighter fit change any of this?

Yes, more than people expect. A loose cotton tee lets air move between the fabric and your skin even once it's damp, which speeds up evaporation and keeps you from feeling as clammy. A tight cotton layer traps that same moisture directly against skin with nowhere for air to circulate, which is closer to the downside people associate with cotton in the first place. Fit matters almost as much as fibre choice here, a relaxed cut in cotton often outperforms a snug one in the same fabric.

What about hemp and lyocell?

Both are natural, cellulose-based fibres like cotton, and both handle moisture differently than plain cotton does. Lyocell, made from wood pulp through a closed-loop process, has a smoother, more uniform fibre structure than cotton. That structure absorbs moisture efficiently but also releases it faster, so lyocell blends dry noticeably quicker than pure cotton while keeping the same soft, breathable feel against skin.

Hemp brings a different strength: it's naturally more breathable and moisture-regulating than cotton on its own, and it's a far lighter footprint to grow, hemp generally needs less water and far fewer pesticides than conventional cotton to produce the same amount of fibre. Neither fibre sheds microplastic, and neither creates the trapped, occlusive layer that synthetic fabric does against sweaty skin.

Our core fabric is an 80/20 cotton-hemp jersey, cotton for the soft hand-feel, hemp for the added breathability and durability, at 190gsm and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. It's built specifically to keep cotton's comfort while reducing the specific weakness pure cotton has under heavy sweat. It won't out-wick a technical synthetic shirt on a marathon day, nothing without plastic in it will, but for the vast majority of training, recovery, and everyday wear, it's a meaningfully better trade than either plain cotton or a fully synthetic fabric.
